A resident at the South Port Square senior living facility has died from COVID-19, according to the facility’s executive director, Brian Hess.
There is one additional resident who tested positive for the virus and is being treated at a local hospital.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with their family and friends during this difficult time, said Hess. “The resident had lived at South Port Square for 20 years and will be greatly missed.”
As a result of the two positive cases, the facility has stepped up preventative measures.
They have increased the frequency and rigor of cleaning and sanitizing common areas, restricted visitors and have canceled all previously scheduled social events and recreational activities on-site.
Additionally, they will be making the CDC’s prevention resources available to all residents.
Employees will now be screened daily and have their temperatures taken before each shift and will also wear masks while caring for residents.
“We will remain flexible as this crisis evolves to ensure we are following the latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We will adapt as these issues continue to evolve, and new challenges arise. We are providing all our residents and employees, as well as appropriate local, county, and state health agencies with regular updates,” Hess said.
Both workers and residents are working hard to keep everyone healthy.
“I am doing what I am supposed to be doing. I am trying to abide by the restrictions,” said resident Judy Weggeman. “No activities, all of the common areas are out of bounds…six feet apart, soap and water, wash hands.”
She says she’s not surprised about the cases, but grateful the facility is taking extra precautions to protect their residents and staff.
